wow

So a quick update is in order for those regular readers who have been gravely disappointed with my lack of posting.

#1) Lori and I are engaged.

#2) Kaelyn is doing great

#3) We are moved in to our new house

Ok.. now on to the subject at hand.

I can't sleep. So what do I do? I check myspace.com. It's to the point where my brain is mush but I am just not tired, so a website like myspace is perfect. You've all heard of it, some of you love it, some of you hate it, some of you are fairly oblivious to it. No matter what your thoughts, it does prove its purpose as a social networking site. As such, I spent the 20th hour awake in my day (Kaelyn woke up early needing to be fed today) checking in on who from my High School graduating class were around.

The conclusion I've come to is that I'm old.

Today at work I was discussing price erosion in a commoditized market and how that relates to a company's decision on whether to focus on revenue growth at a low margin or to create new growth and/or product enhancements to maintain margin on top of the commoditized services.

Huh?

I'm only 26! Should I care that much about my employer's goal in the business market? Should I even know enough about the business aspects of my field to know what features are commoditized or high margin? Didn't I start out as a computer geek? The best part was when someone came up and pointed out exactly those things. Granted, he was trying to make a joke, but I think the point stands..

Do I care too much? Should I put my head down and just do my job without worrying about these things? Would I be happier? Would I succeed any further?

Shouldn't I be discussing the hot chick on the cover of Maxim? Or how drunk I heard someone in the office was last night when one of the vendors took him out for drinks?

How about talking about the Superbowl and how great the Diamondbacks may or may not be this coming year?

Yeah, I guess I do those some, but man I get too caught up in work sometimes. I work with a bunch of people who have a decade on me and I fit right in way too often.

Don't get me wrong, I love solving problems. I love the mix of geekery (yeah I'm trademarking that) and business that I am being exposed to, but that doesn't mean I need to live it or breathe it.

On the flip side I'm damn happy I'm not still doing what some of my High School class is doing with their lives where they will be 36 and still acting like they're 18. Just don't let me act 36 when I'm really 26.

I'm holding you all to this.

A side note on myspace.. they are a large Internet customer of my employer. With this knowledge in mind, Lori enjoys the day when she can threaten Kaelyn with "Be good or daddy will shut off myspace!"

I always love that story. Which means I've probably told each and every one of you already.

Of course, if the generation gaps continue she'll just hack in to my servers, trojan horse my ssh client and steal the passwords so she can turn it back on.

We're so in trouble.
